Having demolished the margaritas and the beer, everyone heads for home. Everyone, that is, but Gloria and me. When I get back to my tent, I check on Toby and Rachel, both fast asleep near the fire. As I add more wood, I come within a few inches of Rachel's face as she slumbers. The flickering firelight catches the gray hair around her muzzle and shoots silver down Toby's back. They look like two captive angels put to sleep by some fairy-tale curse. Up in the bandstand, Binky has joined Yoko in the warmer space beneath the Plexiglas. I can see the two sets of shoulders slumped together in the corner of the little room. Looks as if Binky has adjusted to the idea of sleeping with others.

Inside my tent, I set the alarm. I'll get up every three hours for the rest of the night. The frogs in the moat are chorusing. I shoo a fox away from the kitchen tent. The chimps do not stir. As usual, Tom visits me in my dreams. He unzips my tent flap, sticks his head inside, and tells me not to worry. He'll keep the fires going, he says. He'll make sure everyone's warm and dry.
